“I didn’t rebuild my routine to be productive. I rebuilt a simple routine for overwhelmed women like me, because my nervous system needed something stable to hold onto.”
I Didn’t Expect Life To Change This Fast
We live in Dubai and because of the current uncertainty we decided I’d return to South Africa while my husband remained in Dubai.
A week later, I was standing in my sister’s kitchen, and everything felt strangely unfamiliar.
The energy in the Cape is so much different from Dubai, but its more than that.
The way her house runs, the new rhythm to my days, even my body felt out of sync.
And when life shifts that quickly, no matter how easy go-with-the-flow your personality is, you realise something very fast:
When you don’t create a new routine, life will be uncertain until you do. You don’t need a perfect plan. You just need something familiar that makes you feel safe again.
The Moment Everything Clicked
My sister made a big dish of mac and cheese to welcome me back home. It’s my absolute favourite dish in the entire world. And it tasted amazing.
So, I kept eating it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I also brought Dubai chocolate that I ate, on top of that. And because I was eating so clean in Dubai I quickly felt bloated, exhausted and completely out of rhythm.
And that’s when it hit me:
If I didn’t get some kind of routine back, even a simple one, everything I had worked on over the past year could unravel very quickly.

The Small Shift That Helped Me Find My Feet
As I said before, my sister’s home functions differently to mine, because she has a daughter in school and her husband works from home most mornings. Whereas I don’t have children, my husband works long hours and most often away from home for a week or more at a time.
My sister and I are very similar in how we structure our days. It makes living together easy. When you live with someone, even when you’re welcome, you naturally want to help, not feel like a burden. We don’t follow strict routines each day, we structure our days according to what’s on the schedule and make sure to hit goals like meal times and exercise daily.
So instead of trying to force my old routine into this new environment, I went back to basics.
Familiar actions, like my morning walks, journaling and quiet time helped me feel safe and at home. That, in turn, calmed my nervous system. That feeling of anxiousness (fight or flight) calmed down.
I achieved this by identifying familiar habits I want to practice in my new environment that will benefit me and still align with my goals for the year.
Now, each morning, I focused on just a few things:
Eat a simple breakfast, walking outside in the fresh air, help around the house and to get ready for my day by getting dressed.
That’s it. I am not putting pressure on myself to reach perfection. Just a few familiar habits to steady my nervous system.
Why Routine Isn’t About Discipline
We often think routines are about being productive.
They’re not.
They’re about stability.
When your life feels uncertain, your nervous system is constantly scanning for safety.
And a simple, familiar routine does something powerful:
It tells your brain,
“You’re okay. This day is manageable.”
That’s why I still start my mornings slowly.
Because when your day begins in a rush and without a plan, your body stays in stress mode.
And when you’re in midlife, that stress response hits harder, affecting your energy, your mood, and even your health.
The One Habit That Grounded Me Most
The habit helping me most right now is simple:
Walking. Getting outside. Moving my body and breathing.
It sounds small, but it’s doing something big.
It’s calming my nervous system. Removing my anxiety and that fight or flight feeling is gone.
It’s also giving my day a starting point.
And it’s something I can control, even when everything else feels uncertain.
If You Need a Simple Routine for Overwhelmed Women
Each one of us is in different life seasons.
Maybe you know exactly what season you’re in.
Work is demanding.
Your family needs you.
Everything feels a bit too much.
Or maybe you’re unaware of the exact season, you just feel that your life isn’t working as it should, without being able to pinpoint why.
Either way, you don’t need a full life overhaul.
Start here:
Slow your mornings down, know what goals you need to hit
Choose one predictable habit that will give your day a feeling of safety
That’s enough.
