Goal Setting for Busy Women: The One Goal Method

23% of people quit their New Year’s resolutions by the second Friday of January. They even call it “Quitters Day.” Goal setting for busy women is almost impossible to achieve, because they hardly have time for their daily routine, let alone crafting new habits.

But here’s what I learned the year everything changed: you don’t need seven goals to transform your life. You need one “Jeans Goal.”

    What’s a Jeans Goal?

A Jeans Goal is one small, specific focus that creates a ripple effect across your entire life. When you nail this one thing, everything else starts falling into place naturally.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:

    • Focus on fitting into one pair of jeans → You buy less junk food → You save money
    • Walk 10 minutes daily → You have more energy → You show up better at work
    • Pack lunch three days a week → You cut spending → You eat healthier

One goal. Multiple wins. That’s the magic you’re looking for in 2026.

The year I focused on fitting into one specific pair of jeans, I ended up transforming my entire life. I decided on a way to fit into those jeans and I ate three healthy meals a day, that’s it. Some weeks I hit it. Some weeks I didn’t. But because it was specific and achievable, I actually stuck with it. And the spillover effects? Better energy, more confidence, money saved on junk food. All from one simple focus.

    Choose Your Focus Area

I’ve identified three areas in our lives where one focused goal can change everything. Pick the ONE area keeping you up at night right now.

It doesn’t have to be all three. Just one could do fine. This depends on your personal capacity and season of life.

QUICK WIN: Grab my free Annual Goal Setting Guide to help you identify which area needs your attention most right now.

Let’s see where your pain point is.

    1. Personal Goals: Make It So Small It Feels Almost Silly

Most women say “I want to lose weight” every January. And most women struggle. Because “lose weight” isn’t a goal, it’s a wish. It’s too vague, too big, and too overwhelming when you’re already drowning.

    Instead, get ridiculously specific:

    • “I want to fit into my favourite jeans” (my Jeans Goal)
    • “I want to walk 10 minutes a day”
    • “I want to eat one vegetable with dinner”
    • “I want to get dressed every morning for confidence”

QUICK WIN: Try This Tonight If life is running at a 10 out of 10 pace right now, pick something you’re already doing anyway and just make it intentional. Getting dressed? Do it for YOU, not just because you have to. You’re already doing it, you might as well make it count. Not to mention that putting yourself together builds confidence and a productive morning routine.

    2. Financial Goals: Pick ONE Specific Number

Money stress is personal. And it’s hard. But if you’re lying awake at night worrying about where it all goes, this should be your focus for 2026.

Don’t say: “I should get my finances in order”

    Do say:

    • “Pay off my $800 Visa card” (name the specific card)
    • “Add an extra $50 to my car loan payment” (name the specific payment)
    • “Cut my grocery bill by $20 a week” (then figure out HOW)
    • “Pack lunch 3 days a week to save $40/month” (plan which days and what you’ll pack)

QUICK WIN: This Week Pick the debt you want to tackle BY NAME. Make it personal. Focus on that one thing. When my husband and I were in financial trouble, we used Dave Ramsey’s debt snowball method to get out of it. It worked because we could see progress quickly. We would have gone bankrupt if we didn’t make it work.

See how your goals connect? If you’re spending less to hit your Jeans Goal, you’re saving money. When you’re meal planning to cut your grocery bill? You’re probably eating healthier. Everything feeds into everything.

    3. Professional Goals: Match Your Current Season

This looks different for everyone, and that’s okay.

For the corporate mom drowning in meetings: Maybe this year you start looking for something else. Or maybe you make peace with where you are and focus on bringing happiness, calm and stability there. Both are valid.

If you’re a stay-at-home mom who feels like you lost your identity: Your goal might be “Create one system that gives me 5 minutes of sanity back.” But be specific, like a meal rotation, a simplified laundry routine or fixing one corner of your home to stay organized.

If you’re in a life transition: This past year we moved from the Cayman Islands to Dubai. My entire life was upside down. I had ONE goal: Launch my business. And I did it. Because it was the only goal I had to protect.

The Secret Weapon: Your Word for the Year

Here’s what helped me stay on track when motivation faded: I chose one word.

That year, my word was JEANS. When I’d reach for chocolate at the store or want a second helping at dinner, I’d whisper “JEANS” to myself. It brought me back to my goal.

This year, my word is STEADY. When I don’t feel like walking my 10 minutes, I just say “steady” and it reminds me who I’m becoming.

    Your word could be:

    • Your goal itself: “JEANS” “DEBT-FREE” “CALM”
    • How you want to feel: “STRONG” “PEACE” “FREE” “BRAVE”
    • How you want to show up: “STEADY” “PRESENT” “ENOUGH” “HOPEFUL”

Pick something gentle. Something that reminds you you’re choosing yourself, not out of shame, but out of love.

Why This Works When Everything Else Failed

I used to sit down every January 1st with ambitious lists. Lose weight. Save money. Wake up at 5am. Get organized. Be a better wife.

By week two? I’d abandoned them all. I’d avoid my journal because it felt like evidence of failure.

I did this for years until I finally stopped setting goals altogether. The pressure was crushing me.

But the Jeans Goal year changed everything because:

    • Specific enough to feel real
    • Achievable in my actual season of life
    • It spilled over into other areas naturally
    • It gave me hope instead of shame

You don’t need to be perfect. You need to take one brave step toward the life you actually want.

Your Turn: What’s Your ONE Goal?

Deep down, you already know what your Jeans Goal is. You’ve known all along. This is just permission to finally choose it.

Tell me in the comments: What is the ONE small goal you’re choosing for yourself in 2026?
