Can’t Stick to Your Goals? Break the Stop-Start Cycle Habits
Overwhelmed woman relaxing on couch with coffee, text overlay “The Real Problem Stop Start Cycle”, representing struggle with inconsistent habits and routines

The Sunday afternoon light filters through your living room as you sink into the couch with your coffee. Your mind is already racing ahead to Monday morning, this week will be different. You can feel it.

You picture yourself meal prepping on Sunday night, laying out workout clothes, maybe even waking up before the kids for that quiet morning moment everyone talks about. The version of yourself in your head is in control, intentional and successful.

But there’s something else lurking underneath that hope. A small voice that whispers ‘I wonder how long this will last’. It’s almost always the same pattern. By Wednesday you grab fast food because making dinner feels impossible.

By Friday, that hopeful Sunday afternoon version of yourself is only a glimmer in the rearview mirror. And you’re stuck in what I call the stop-start cycle, wondering what you can do to reach your dreams, even the reasonable stuff. Why do we live in a world that tells women they need perfect conditions to improve their lives?

Why This Keeps Happening (My Discovery)

A few years ago I managed to lose 16kg, but I gained it all back over time. Sound familiar?

When I lost the initial weight, I gave myself no permission to mess up. The approach was too rigid, so when I inevitably slipped, I gave up entirely and gained it all back.

The second time was different. I decided on a specific eating approach and started each day making the right decision for breakfast. The rest of the day became easier. Was it perfect every day? No, but looking back, who cares. It’s almost one year on and I lost 10kg. Well done to me.

The difference? I realized that willpower fades quickly, especially when your day runs away with you. So, I created one small, sustainable habit that eventually became part of daily life without thinking about it.

What Actually Works When You’re Overwhelmed

Here’s what worked for me and the women I’ve worked with:

    💚 Start Embarrassingly Small

💚 Focus on One Thing at a Time

💚 Plan Your Comeback Before You Need It

    Start Embarrassingly Small

You’re not failing because your goals are too big. You’re struggling because they’re too big for your current life season. When you’re in survival mode, your brain will struggle to take on more responsibilities. So instead of planning to drive to the gym for a 30-minute session (which adds an hour to your already busy schedule), try 10 minutes of walking outside or exercising at home.

Instead of changing your entire routine, from when you get up to the way you’re eating. Try to track only breakfast. Start with something so small it feels almost silly not to do it.

Focus on One Thing at a Time

Very common advice is to link new habits to existing ones, and this can work beautifully when done strategically. But instead of forcing a random connection, think about your goal first. When would it best slot into your day?

If your goal is health, try a 10-minute walk after lunch or dinner. If it’s a calmer home, do a 10-minute reset when you check if the doors are locked before bed. Couple your new habit with an automated action that already happens in that part of your day.

At first, you’ll need to set an alarm to trigger the action until it becomes automatic. I started with breakfast because that’s when my brain was freshest and I had the most control over my schedule. That’s it. Once that felt natural, I added the next piece.

Plan Your Comeback Before You Need It

Life will interrupt your plans. Kids get sick, work explodes and unexpected things will happen. Instead of treating this as failure, plan for it. Decide right now what you’ll do when you miss a day (or seven). Don’t wait until you’re disappointed and resentful. Have your rebound strategy ready.

Most often I don’t only derail with food, but also with keeping up with the house. So, my reset strategy tackles both. I start by doing a nice house clean because it gives me momentum, then I plan a tasty breakfast that I know I’ll be in the mood for, no matter what. I also keep backup food options ready that still move me towards the version of myself I want to become, instead of giving up entirely.

    When You Get This Right

Your life can transform in a short time. Don’t give up. This year could be your best year yet. Adjust your plan when you need to, not if you need to. You’re ready to create the life you want, without waiting for perfect conditions. You start to realize that showing up imperfectly is better than not showing up at all. Planning doesn’t mean you’re not open to change. Planning is what keeps us floating when life becomes the storm we’re navigating.

If You Don’t Make This Shift

Time will pass anyway. Another year of the same cycle, the Sunday couch planning, Wednesday excuses and Friday disappointment. Another year of believing you’re the problem when the real issue is trying to build habits while you’re overwhelmed with your life. And before you know it, you’ve spent another year thinking you need more motivation when what you really needed was to show yourself grace.

    Start Today

What can you do today to move you towards your dream life? If you’ve been in a cycle of stop-start, try scaling down to just one small habit. Pick the smallest possible action that still moves you toward your goal, and start today.

My free overwhelm-free guide has a section to help you plan your rebound strategy for when life throws you that inevitable curveball. It’s designed to help you stay on track without the pressure.
